Powerful stories are those which are complex and at the same time simple. The complexity comes in the interweaving of simple narratives that make the story a journey in understanding. For Christians the story of the cross is one that is fundamental in that it symbolizes many aspects that define their faith, irrespective of denomination. The ultimate and last sacrifice. Aspera Design was approached by Fr. Geoffrey of Sacred heart Cathedral along Langata Road. The brief was to interpret the story of the cross which was dear to the father. The father being a thespian during his early ministry days, performed the story of Jesus, he playing Jesus. The most powerful point of the performance was the crucifixion, fulfilling prophecies and setting the stage for the resurrection.
The project started in 2016 when a local artist living in the neighboring Kuwinda community, was appointed to model and sculpt the corpus. The artist used locally sourced mild steel and concrete to sculpt the 9 meter by 9 meter sculpture in a 3m x 3 m shed. The corpus was molded in piecemeal fashion averaging 2 meter pieces. Two years later November 2018, the project broke ground on site where the cross was set out and constructed. Given the powerful nature of the symbol the crucifix represents, we decided to make it the principal organizing element as one enters the church visibly from within the church and travelling along Langata road. While at the foot of the cross, the program is flexible for congregational seating during mass and during the weekday it can be parking. The form of the base lends itself to mimic Golgotha, the hill from where the cross was erected. The circular path leading to the platform takes one on a pilgrimage from where one would be able to experience the corpus in 360 degree fashion, starting at the altar and landing at the foot for the corpus. On the raised platform, the 14 stages of the cross start and go round clockwise ending at the ramp landing. The project is currently under construction where the 22 meter tall cross has been built and the corpus has been mounted, the podium is under construction where the finishes are yet to be finalized.
